To all Cat Owners/Cat Volunteers/Publics,

We are a small group of volunteers who take care of the stray cats living within the campus of Lingnan University (Lingnan). Recently, we discovered several domestic cats being cruelly abandoned in the campus with different degree of problems observed. The Rabies Ordinance (Cap 421) provides that it is illegal to abandon animals.  Offenders may be liable to a fine of $10,000 and imprisonment of 6 months. With respect the welfare of cats, please DO NOT abandon or relocate any cats in Lingnan University! The negative consequences are listed as below,

  • Domestic cats do not have the necessary skills to survive in the outdoor environment, nor to fight for a colony. Cases have happened from time to time with cats were found dead in campus or with serious injury or illness. Many cats in Lingnan are FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) carriers. This virus can be spread through biting among felines that wears down their immune system and leads to other fatal infections.

  • Our group comprise only of a few existing or former Lingnan’s staff. With our very limited resources, we strive to feed nearly a hundred cats within campus and to arrange having them sprayed or neutered.  WE really cannot afford to share extra resources to help many other sick cats, infants and regular neuter practices in need. Some cases happened and we cannot handle within the most suitable period of time. If more cats to come, the situations will become worse.

  • Previously, some news or media reported the stray cats in Lingnan, to which may have given out a wrong impression that Lingnan looks like a good place for cats.  But the truth is, cats living in Lingnan campus are facing various dangers, e.g. potential threats from dogs and snake. Some cats were found missing with a trace. The closest private residential estates near Lingnan bear minimal tolerance and complained stray cats entering into their area. Their estate offices called AFCD to set cat traps. Some cats trapped by these cages and passed to AFCD office. We do not receive any response even if we phoned AFCD to enquire about the missing cats.

Please understand we are neither a charity organization nor a long run animal organization, manpower and resources are always limited and have been our long-term problems. We provide foods for nearly a hundred cats are already a tough work for us. Thus Lingnan campus is not an “Ideal place” for stray cats as incorrectly reported by some newspapers.

Please consider the Lingnan cats’ welfare and be a responsible pet owner, please DO NOT abandon any cat in Lingnan. Thank you.

If you have enquiries, please email to viruslib@gmail.com.
